The Rylo 360-Degree Camera is a new VR camera developed by a team of former Apple, Instagram and Hyperlapse engineers and is one of the smallest, most powerful, easy to use, and cost effective 360 camera on the market.
VR is the new frontier in the video world. VR videos are all over the web these days, partly thanks to integration of 360-video on platforms like Facebook and YouTube, and new cheap VR hardware available to consumers — particularly headsets that use smartphones as the screen. While in many ways VR and 360 as a video format is still in its infancy, it has shown to be wildly popular. People are still figuring out how to use it best in storytelling but it has shown many novel uses including in journalism and sports.
Mostly VR and 360 video has been limited in production as 360 cameras are either too expensive and complicated to use or not great quality for cheaper options. Additionally editing these videos can be a tedious and laborious process. The Rylo camera is here to change that and make 360 video more widely available and easier to producer.
The Rylo is a small 360 camera that can fit comfortably in the palm of your hand and has an array of amazing features that make it great to use. The camera shoots 360 video in 4K and can easily be formatted for standard 16:9 video at 1080p full HD. The camera has two 208-degree, f/2.8 lenses paired with Sony sensors, and includes a handy grip/tripod that lets you hold it or mount it easily so it doesn’t get in your way. Additionally, the camera has a very powerful stabilization setting that can take your shaky footage and make it smooth with just the tap of a button.
The camera comes with a mobile app that synchs your video when you plug the camera into your phone and has an editing app that easily transforms your video into the 360 experience or can crop out a 16:9 section for standard video use. Just plug into your phone and the editing app takes care of the rest, stitching together the dual lens footage for you into an immersive video experience.
As more people get their hands on 360 cameras, more innovative ways of using the format will develop. With the Rylo we see an opening for video producers to be able to create amazing 360 videos without completely disrupting their workflow otherwise. 360 video can be a great tool in your tool-belt as a video producer and we are excited to see if the format evolves in interesting ways, or falls by the wayside as just another fad like 3D television.
You can buy the Rylo for $499 here.
