Yesterday, Melissa Flemming from UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (the group we have been training to shoot their own video with an iPhone in world hot-spots) and her family dropped by our NY apartment.
Her husband Peter is a Vienna based documentary film-maker and he brought with him an interesting new attachment for making iPhone videos.
It’s called Olloclip, and it’s a small, multi-lens device that slips over the corner of your iPhone to place a series of lenses – from wide angle to macro, over the iPhone lens and converts it into a much more powerful video making machine.
I have just ordered one, so I can’t comment on it personally, but I was so impressed with Peter’s brief demonstration that I felt compelled to share this with you right away.
Here’s a sample of the worldwide reviews this is getting from Wired Magazine’s review of Olloclip:
Laptop Magazine agreed, and expounded on the potential the device unlocks. They noted that a dedicated point-and-shoot couldn’t swap a fish-eye for a macro as quickly as the Olloclip can. Macworldlikes that “the fisheye and wide-angle lenses also have secure, plastic lens caps, so you don’t need to worry about the glass getting scratched while bouncing around in a bag with sharp items.†Engadget held lenses to professional standards, and only found “minor barrel distortion†compared to that of a DSLR’s wide-angle lens.
Olloclip goes for about $70, and has a range of options. You can order it from Amazon.
And of course, while you are at it, be sure to get a copy of iPhone Millionaire: Six Weeks To Change Your Life
