So spreadable, it’s incredible.. or is that something else?
Andy Warhol once said, ‘in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes’.
He was not wrong.
Paula Deene, as you can see, is today launching her newest crack at breaking into the online video User Generated Content (that would be us) world with The Real Women of Philadelphia.
Now, IÂ am not suggesting that you get to work on making your own cream cheese recipe video. (I am also not suggesting that you don’t, although it does seem a bit sexist to me that this competition is open only to women, but that’s another story). In any event, should you choose to go for the $25k prize, lemme know.
What this competition does do is it opens to door to lots of insight into where the online video world is headed and how major US corporations, (Kraft, who owns Philadelphia, is the largest food company in the world) are starting to look at online video and UGC.
First, to the idea that you can appear as the star of your own TV show online.
This is obvioulsy where Paula Deene is headed. She used to be on cable. Now she’s online, and probably attracting a larger aggregate audience. Remember, when you’re on cable you have only one tune-in half hour, and lots of competition. A good cable show today gets a .1 rating (that’s considered pretty good for most cable these days). That means a viewership of 90,000 households. For youtube, of course, 90,000 views is OK but no genius. Even our heroin video online has gotten close 750,000 views. That’s a .8 rating for cable. Pretty good! As it turns out online video may turn out to be a better vehicle for getting yourself ‘out there’ than cable in the long run.
We’re going to be talking a lot about using online video to Build Your Own Brand today at 4PM right here at nyvs.com, as Lisa and I attempt to become Paula Deene (metaphorically that is) with our own live webcast show. Tune in!
OK so much for the shameless self promotion.
The other interesting insight the one get’s from the Paula Deene make your own cream cheese video (aside from their achingly close steal of the Real Housewives franchise), is that a major corporation, Kraft, is now beginning to see the power of User Generated Videos.
Other corporations take note.
What works for Kraft will also work for GM, Ford and just aboute everyone else.
And why not?
Blogging got there years ago. Video is surely next.
How many ‘famous’ bloggers – people who in fact went on to build careers derivative of their start in the blogosphere – now fill the ranks of places like Huffington Post and even major TV networks. What worked for print now will start to work for video. And how much marketing power is there in blogging? Lots. Now Vlogging (and I hate that word) takes its proper position.
So while you may not want to become the Cream Cheese Queen (and a free trip to LA!), you can see that what works for Cream Cheese will also work for golf, tennis, cars, clothing and just about everything else.
The video land grab is about to start.
