Now you see it, now you see more of it This one is called Augmented Reality or Mediated Reality. It has been around, in one form or another since the 1990s, and has, until now, mostly been seen in sports. You know, the yellow line on the field that isn’t really there. Green screen was and is a kind of mediated reality. But until now this application for video has been far to expensive for the ‘average’ person to use. No more. Like everything else, the irrepressible march of Moore’s Law is now making Augmented Reality available to everyone. And that means that it’s going to start percolating into every aspect of our lives, from home videos to advertising. Look to ads first. Or instructional content for websites and magazine websites. But this technology is moving super fast. Even an article from Mashable from 18 months ago giving a list of 10 cool AR apps is today hopelessly dated. Sure, slapping graphics on top of stills or video is… interesting, but by now really quite old. What makes the above app intreresting is the ability to weave yourself and your own video into the real world. It’s a big step from red lines on a still photo. The app is produced by Aurasma, whose website doesnt’ tell you a whole lot yet, but lets you apply for more info, which I did.
