NYÂ Times Video Chief Ann Derry
Yesterday, Ann Derry announced that The NY Times was starting to give their reporters iPhones to cover stories in video as well as in text.
So far, so good.
But this is 2011.
Never the less, let me applaud Ann Derry and The New York Times for their progress.
In 1994, The New York Times bought one of my companies, VNI (Video News International).
I had told Punch Sulzberger that I could bring video to the newspaper.
The idea was to give video cameras (in those days Hi8) to the newspaper reporters so that they could create video as well as text.
As part of the purchase I was made President of a new company – New York Times Television.
Immediately after I started working at The Times, I was invited to lunch by Joe Lelyveld, then Managing Editor of the paper.
We had lunch in the very posh corporate dining room upstairs in the old building.
As waiters served salmon on siver trays, Lelyveld congratulated me on the new job. Then he turned to me and said
“You are not to come anywhere near my newsroom or the newspaper….more salmon?”
Well, times have certainly changed at The Times.
Here’s a sample, though sadly not embeddable

Maybe in another 20 years
Maybe not.
More salmon?

Mike, I thought you would find this site interesting. Maybe it’s a potential money maker for content providers.

I watched Mr. Murdoch today unveil The Daily – online newpaper partnership with Apple iPad. Certainly, the NYTimes views The Daily as their competition.
