Watch this!
OK
It is not often that I will tell you this, but this piece is required viewing.
It’s by Michelle Michael, a Videojournalist for the Armed Forces Network in Germany.
She also just won the NPPA (National Press Photographer’s Association) VJ of the Year Award.
And you can see why.
First, her shooting is just beautiful. Incredibly clean. Perfect.
You will notice that she adheres to the 5-shot rule. She never moves the camera. The close-ups are stunning – and there are a lot of them. She does not hesitate to get close and intimate with her subject and in doing so she draws the viewer in immediately.
The editing also is lovely. She doesn’t linger and she has a great sense of pacing. The writing is, like the shooting, direct and simple but engaging. She doesn’t narrate to you, she tells you a story. And note that SHE tells the story. The soundbites are there as enhancement and punctuation.
It is not wonder she is an award winner.
Watch this again, and learn.
Here are few links to some of her other stories, which, alas, are not embeddable.

I particularly like the bowling alley shoes story.
Look at how the shooting and pacing match the unrelenting rhythm of the bowling alley and the machines, Perfect. Just perfect,
