There’s Something Happening Here…
Yesterday, Youtube announced their one billionth subscription.
That is, the one billionth time someone has hit the yellow ‘subscribe’ button on Youtube.
Youtube is only 5 years old.
How much is a billion?
It’s a number we throw around a lot.
To put it in perspective, one billion minutes ago we were in the depth of the Roman Empire.
Or more precisely it was the year 110 AD.
If you spent on minute on each video, that’s how long it would take you to screen them all.
And we’re only 5 years in.
We are 5 years into the greatest revolution since Gutenberg first laid paper to inked typeface.
Video, which used to be in the sole and exclusive hands of a few executives in New York and Hollywood has now been put in everyone’s hands.
Not just to watch it, but to create it.
It may have started as cats in trees, but its come a long way since, and we are still in the very first days.
The most powerful medium mankind has ever created (it is not for nothing that we each spend 4.5 hours a day watching TV) is now, quite suddenly, in everyone’s hands to do with it what they see fit.
Who knows where this will end up.
But like Buffalo Springfield says
There’s something happening here
but what it is ain’t exactly clear…
