The hard working Arthur Hsu, liason to the Grads
Yesterday we kicked off our first advanced course for the Travel Channel Academy down here in DC at Travel Channel HQ.
We had been thinking of running a series of advanced courses for some time, and this weekend, we are trying out the first. Â Yesterday we ran a one-day advanced shooting course, taught by Drew Tierney.
Drew has been a trainer with us since Voice of America bootcamps in 1998, and also spent 5 years on the BBC project as a trainer, so he knows our process very very well. Â His wife Laurel has also been a trainer with us since she did Danish TV in 1993 and The Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation in Ramallah in 1994. Â As a cameraman for NBC News, Drew is well equipped to instruct the advanced course.
Today, we’ll be spending one day on advanced editing. This course is being taught by Kelly Korzan, who heads up our LA office and is Director of Training. Â Everyone who has taken a course with us in the past five years knows Kelly, but they may not know that she was the lead editor on such TV series as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Frontier House for PBS and many National Geographic and Frontline series. Â Her husband Tim recently returned from Prague, where he ran our sessions with Radio Free Europe and has been working with us as a trainer since Oxygen Media (1999). Tim also spent several years with us at The BBC, where he worked with Drew. Â He now heads up the conversion of the LA Times to the VJ model. Â
We are a very family-oriented business. Â
We’ve only been working with Arthur Hsu (pictured above) for a relatively short time (just a few years now), but we expect that he too will be a long-time member of our family – and like many others who work with us, perhaps find romance within our group as well. One never knows.
For those who wish to find out more about advanced training sessions in the future, as usual, please go to the Travel Channel Academy webpage.

I took the first courses in LA November 2007. I have been perfecting my craft for Magazine style shooting, which I learned from Eric and Travel Channel. Arthur was always above and beyond the call of duty to support us students. They really support you after you graduate. I am eternally grateful to you guys. And great news… I am signing up for the advanced courses in DC this June 2010. Can’t wait to see you all again and take my skills even further.
For years I have worked production on “other” people/companies projects…. now I know that I am more than on my way to making my own broadcast quality, sell-able content for many outlets. Thank you Travel Channel, thank you Rosenblum TV… just cause you have a camera does not mean you are a producer or director. You ensure that the person behind the camera – and/or in front of it – is ready to work, sooner than they ever thought possible.
Much love and see you guys soon….
